Why is my converted image larger?

Understand why a PNG can be larger than HEIC, WebP, AVIF or JPG.

Updated October 9, 2026

Different formats store the same pixels differently

Pixel dimensions and file size measure different things. A 2000 × 1500 image still has three million pixels after a format change, but its encoded bytes may change substantially. HEIC, AVIF, WebP and JPG can use lossy compression; PNG stores decoded pixels without another lossy step.

Choose the output for your purpose

Use JPG for an ordinary photo if size and compatibility matter. Keep PNG when transparency, text or crisp graphics matter. A larger PNG does not prove that the image has gained detail. This converter changes the file format; it does not resize the image.

Compare the actual result

The file row displays original and converted sizes. For JPG, adjust quality and convert again, then download and inspect the result. Compare at the same pixel dimensions and keep your original. There is no guarantee that every conversion makes a file smaller.
